Pitt's mascot came to life in 1909 when the Panther was selected to represent the school.
The mascot was nicknamed "Roc" in the 1990s to honor Steve Petro, former football player, assistant coach, athletic department assistant, and long-time fan, whose nickname from his playing days under Jock Sutherland was "The Rock."
